Sifu Michael Gubbels

Sifu Michael Gubbels has been training martial arts since 1990. He began in Tae Kwon Do before moving to Hapkido. He found his passion for Kung Fu training under Grand Master Chiu Lau beginning in 1993. He has trained at the school ever since, achieving his black belt in 2002. Thanks to his dedication and skill he was chosen to be an instructor at the Chiu Lau Kung Fu College in 2002, and ran the Kung Fu program at the Royal Glenora Club from 2005 to 2013. He trained at the Shao Lin Temple in Deng Feng, China (2005, 2011, 2014), where he specialized in the two-handed sword. Sifu Mike completed his training of the Ving Tsun system in Hong Kong (2016, 2017, 2018) and received instructor certification under Grandmaster (Sigung) Chau Lin Fat. He loves the exercise, art, and philosophy of practicing Kung Fu and is driven to pass on the benefits to others to build their lives through increased confidence, energy, and health. He works to support Edmonton’s community through organizing several performances and demonstrations each year, adding to the cultural vibrancy of our city, and showcasing positive activities for youth. He believes Kung Fu has significantly increased his self-defence skills, but more so, it has given him the tools needed to be a good father, husband, and friend, and to build a successful career as an Indigenous Relations Advisor for the Government of Alberta’s Environment Ministry.
